Slavery in Islam

Slavery in Islam

Allah the all Mighty says in the Holy Quran that all human being are equal and the most honourable is he who has Taqwa [ [Piety) i.e. one of the Muttaqûn (pious )].
Allah The all Mighty said , O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allâh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqûn (pious)]. Verily, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Aware. ( 49:13,Quran)
It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allâh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allâh, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masâkin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and gives the Zakât, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.) in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are Al Muttaqûn (pious )[002:177,Quran]
In Islam the rights of slaves are great. There are alot of Hadiths about how to treat them. Whosoever doesn’t treat his slave in the manner prescribed by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) will be in great loss at the Day of Judgement and whosoever will follow all the teachings regarding slaves will get a great reward.
Narrated Abu Huraira(R.A):
The Prophet (peace be upon him)said, “Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will save all the parts of his body from the (Hell) Fire as he has freed the body-parts of the slave.” Said bin Marjana said that he narrated that Hadith to ‘Ali bin Al-Husain and he freed his slave for whom ‘Abdullah bin Ja’far had offered him ten thousand Dirhams or one-thousand Dinars.
Volume 3, Book 46, Number 693: Sahih Bukhari
Narrated Abu Dhar(R.A):
I asked the Prophet(pbuh), “What is the best deed?” He replied, “To believe in Allah and to fight for His Cause.” I then asked, “What is the best kind of manumission (of slaves)?” He replied, “The manumission of the most expensive slave and the most beloved by his master.” I said, “If I cannot afford to do that?” He said, “Help the weak or do good for a person who cannot work for himself.” I said, “If I cannot do that?” He said, “Refrain from harming others for this will be regarded as a charitable deed for your own good.
Volume 3, Book 46, Number 694: Sahih Bukhari
Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ashari(R.A):
The Prophet (pbuh) said, “He who has a slave-girl and teaches her good manners and improves her education and then manumits and marries her, will get a double reward; and any slave who observes Allah’s right and his master’s right will get a double reward.”
Volume 3, Book 46, Number 723: Sahih Bukhari
Narrated Al-Ma’rur(R.A):
At Ar-Rabadha I met Abu Dhar who was wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a similar one. I asked about the reason for it. He replied, “I abused a person by calling his mother with bad names.” The Prophet(pbuh) said to me, ‘O Abu Dhar! Did you abuse him by calling his mother with bad names You still have some characteristics of ignorance. Your slaves are your brothers and Allah has put them under your command. So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats and dress him of what he wears. Do not ask them (slaves) to do things beyond their capacity (power) and if you do so, then help them.’(Sahih Bukhari, Belief, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 29)”
Abu Huraira (R.A)reported:
Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: “When the slave of anyone amongst you prepares food for him and he serves him after having sat close to (and undergoing the hardship of) heat and smoke, he should make him (the slave) sit along with him and make him eat (along with him), and if the food seems to run short, then he should spare some portion for him (from his own share) – (Sahih Muslim,The Book of Oaths (Kitab Al-Aiman), Book 015, Number 4096)”
Abu Mas’ud al-Badri (R.A) reported:
“I was beating my slave with a whip when I heard a voice behind me: Understand, Abu Masud; but I did not recognise the voice due to intense anger. He (Abu Mas’ud) reported: As he came near me (I found) that he was the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and he was saying: Bear in mind, Abu Mas’ud; bear in mind. Abu Mas’ud. He (Aba Maslad) said: threw the whip from my hand. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Bear in mind, Abu Mas’ud; verily Allah has more dominance upon you than you have upon your slave. I (then) said: I would never beat my servant in future. (Sahih Muslim, The Book of Oaths (Kitab Al-Aiman), Book 015, Number 4086)”
Allah knows the best.
